The City

Granada, a historic Nicaraguan city on the edge of a huge lake with numerous islands, and boasting an impressive volcano, is one of the most important destinations in the whole Central American region.

Granada used to be the site where Native Nicaraguans, belonging to the tribe Xalteva, lived until the arrival of Spaniards. On this site, in 1524, Spaniards founded Granada. Today, Xalteva is one of Granada's largest neighborhoods.

Lake Cocibolca or Lake Nicaragua is the bigger of the two Great Lakes in the country, and the largest of the region. From one of Granada's small ports, Asese, one can take a boat to visit some of the more than 300-island archipelago located just two miles south of the city. Mombacho Volcano, easily accessible from Granada, is a great site for hiking, exploration and sightseeing.

The School

Our partner school in Granada (Ave Nicaraguita) offers many options of language and volunteering programs according to students’ needs. Home stay with local families, who are eager to share the Nicaraguan culture, is an integral part of their total immersion program.

To assist the students in quickly and efficiently establishing a firm foundation Spanish, the total immersion program not only teaches students to communicate effectively, but also introduces them to Nicaraguan social and cultural life.

Our Opinion

Granada is the ideal destination for those that seek something truly different. It is the oldest city in Central America and the oldest on the mainland of the Americas. Situated on the northwestern shore of Lake Nicaragua and volcano Mombacho, Granada is known to be one of the most beautiful cities of Latin America for its rich colonial heritage, seen in its architecture and layout. Granada is the perfect place to study Spanish and experience the culture and life in one of Nicaragua’s most important cities.
